Buy Avenir DLX Unicycle (24-Inch Wheel)

Avenir DLX Unicycle
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

I've had this unicycle for almost 2 months now.

I got it as my first unicycle, and it was great to learn on. Assembly was easy.

While learning, the only problem I had was if I had a significant fall and the seat hit the ground, it would get knocked out of alignment, even if the seatpost clamp was very tight. This could be solved by having a double bolt clamp, but it was more of an annoyance than a real issue.

Later on, one of the cranks became squeaky and loose. I solved this by taking it off (you'd need a crank extractor tool), greasing the axle, and putting the crank back on VERY tight. It hasn't come loose yet, but if it does I might use loctite.

The saddle is okay as long as you don't do any really long rides, if you really want comfort you'll need a better saddle.

The tire tread doesn't last very long, but 24" tires are pretty cheap.

Overall, I am satisfied with this unicycle given the very low price I paid for it. The problems I mentioned are easily fixable, and hopefully the makers of Avenir will take note of them for the next unicycles they make. If you want a first unicycle or just want a beater, this thing's a good bargain.

Update 3/21/12: I've stored the unicycle outside under shelter for about 2 months now, and the rim's gotten super rusty! Still rides fine but I'm amazed at how fast it rusted and I'm nowhere near saltwater. You get what you pay for I guess.

No instructions in bag, but that was not a significant problem due to its simplicity. The tire would not hold air out of the box, so i had to fix the valve stem. As soon as i tightened the seat down enough that the seat would not slip down when sit upon, the bolt stripped out. Could have been a major problem had i not had access to a metal saw. Afterwards i had to buy a replacement bolt at the hardware store. One pedal crank continually comes loose and i have yet to find a solution. I would not recommend this product.

Got this for my husband as a fun new toy. No put-together instructions, but pretty self-explanatory. Husband is 5'9" and it just fits him, so consider the smaller size if you are shorter than that (or if, say, you are going to share the experience of learning to ride with your nephew). Have Fun!

Honest reviews on Avenir DLX Unicycle (24-Inch Wheel)

(Some background: I used to ride a unicycle in my now long distant youth, and recently on a whim thought I'd get one again. I'm about 6' & 180lbs/80kg.)

So, I ordered the Avenir 24", assembled it, and rode it for literally about two minutes. I rolled into a hover and after about fifteen seconds the hub sheared such that the pedal axle spins inside the hub.

The overall build quality seems reasonably OK, probably on the skimpy side but for $80 I'd let that pass. But, I definitely cannot let the hub design pass: it's some kind of pressed/bonded arrangement and as a main load bearing point it's asking for problems. Reluctantly, since I'll have to spend more money most likely, I opted for a refund since I can't imagine this build quality resulting in anything other than disappointment.

As a beginner, I purchased the Avenir 24" bike to get started. It arrived in a few days, assembly was easy and the quality of the parts seemed good for the price ($79.99). I watched some you-tube videos on how to ride and started practicing with the basic balancing. Within a couple of hours (over the course of a few days) the crankset spool twisted off the wheel hubs. It appears the spool/crank assembly is press fit with the hubs. It could be repaired by welding the assembly. I almost did that but since it was new I returned it and received a new one, Amazon return service was excellent. I assembled it, and within an hour or so the same failure occurred. this time I will get a refund and go for a SUN or something different. One note, I am 6'3" and 220lbs. Maybe this was made for little people. However these things should be able to handle it. I've seen people riding with someone on their shoulders or flipping through the air (just you-tube)so my pedaling four or five feet should be okay. Also I am not going to give up learning how to ride (I'm 58 years old)and I'll find the bike for me and do a review at that time.

Cheers,

Wags

Hard to find size tube for training bike. They installed on my wheels with new tires in a flash. 6 months later and 800 miles they are still holding air.

These tubes work. They are fairly inexpensive and they do a good job. The only thing is the stem is quite long, however, it doesnt hurt anything other than it looks too long.

The new inner tube came quickly, and was rather easy to install. Our stroller is running like new again, and the whole process only took about a week from order to receipt & install. And we now have 1 extra backup spare inner tube, just in case.

I had a inner tube delivered that was too big for our stroller. It was very frustrating. Despite back and forth emails showing the clear error, it was very difficult to just get a refund. It became completely not worth my time for the $10. Upsetting to say the least!

My kids each got a Y Flicker for Christmas. So, I decided I had to have one. I love this. My only complaint is that my model tips rather easily. On a bigger smooth sueface it goes quite fast. Because of the tipping though, not a good trick-trike.

The price for this was great. made like the y-flicker. My kid loved it and since my child is a little heavier we bought the adult size so the whole family enjoys it. Very easy to assemble, shipped on time(actually a couple days early).

After shopping around everywhere on-line, including the classified and auction sites, this was the best deal in a reliable bike rack I could find. Combined with free shipping, it ended up being less than half of the price of the alternatives! This rack is really solid and very quick to take the bikes on and off. It is especially nice that the vertical bar can be rotated flat. This allows quick and painless access into the back of hatchback vehicles without having to remove the rack. A lot of good engineering thought went into this device.

There are two minor points that prevent this item from having five stars. First, beware of the ratcheting top clamps, as they can be a real finger pincher if you are not careful. Second, even though the rack goes together painlessly and quickly, it would be better if the documentation discussed the more subtle but nice features and the best ways of loading and using the rack. For example it is important that the chain side of the two bikes face away from the center post, otherwise there is a clearance problem getting both bikes to fit. Another is the best way to load the first bike (remove both top clamps and rotate the vertical bar down to the back tire position). And yet another is the best approach for optimum positioning of the tire rings (keep all four loose until everything fits, no rubbing points exist and the bikes are centered behind the vehicle).

All in all a great and solid product that will certainly outlast the bicycles it will be hauling around!

This rack is advertized as easy to put together out of the box, and easy to use once you are ready to to ride. Both of these statements are completely true. We have one man's and one woman's comfort bikes and the different length center main clamps of the rack are perfectly suited to these differences in bike design. The rack is very easy to insert and lock into our trailer hitch and the bikes are extremely easy to load requiring only a minimal lift and support to set and lock them into the rack. Definitely truth in advertising!

Bought on Amazon. Best price anywhere by far. Goes together in a snap and what I really like is how it folds up for easy storage. I can take it off the hitch and stow it in the vehicle when I am off riding. I like the way it supports the bike from below as opposed to having bikes hanging by their frames. Well thought out design, and even the locking (clevis pins) are attached by a small cable to keep from loosing them. Swagman sells an extension to add two more bikes if you need it. I only carry one bike, and have room to carry a second if someone wants to join me on a ride. I highly recommend this carrier.

Honest reviews on Swagman XC Cross-Country 2-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (1/1/4 and 2-Inch

This is a great bike rack for SUVs with rear door mounted spare tires. I've got a Toyota FJ Cruiser with a 32"x11" mud tire mounted on the rear and this rack will easily clear this large tire.

Here's why I highly recommend this bike rack. First, it's CHEAP, well made and easy to put together and install. Second, there's a 19" hitch extender that's probably long enough to clear up to 35" spare tires mounted to a rear door. Third, the hitch extender is attached to your 2" hitch with a threaded hitch pin bolt that firmly secures the extender to the hitch, so that the extender doesn't move around. Fourth, there are also 2 large pinch bolts that securely attaches to the bottom of the rack at the other end of extender, so that the rack doesn't move around either; this setup is as "solid" as these things get. Fifth, you can choose to use the rack for one or 2 bikes, depending on your needs; ie., you don't have to install the extra hoops and locking mechanism for a 2nd bike if you only carry one bike like I do. Sixth, your bike(s) is (are) firmly attached to the rack and released with a simple padded ratchet mechanism; no need for tie downs for the wheels and/or handles. All you have to do is place the bike in the tire hoops (which are easily adjusted side to side with a tension nut) and then lower the ratchet mechanism on to the bike's cross bar until the bike is firmly secured and it doesn't matter if you have a straight or slanted cross bar, so no special crossbar attachments to the bike are required either. Seventh, you can get into the back of your SUV by removing the bikes and removing the pin in the center vertical locking bar which allows you to lower it to one side or the other. This isn't as convenient as the more expensive tilting or side arm set ups, but it's not as expensive as them either. Eighth, you don't have to lift and load the bikes up high on the car. The tire hoops are at the level of the hitch and aren't perched precariously high up on the roof or on the tire, which makes loading an unloading a breeze. Ninth, if you need to carry more than 2 bikes, there's an accessory that will allow you to carry 4. It doesn't get much better than this!

BTW, I couldn't find a spare tire bike rack that would fit my 32x11" spare tire, so if you have a spare tire that large or larger don't even bother looking for a spare tire bike rack. There aren't any that will work for tires that large. They are for designed for regular passenger sized tires only.

Even if you only need to carry one bike, this is the rack to have. I have had 3 other big name racks of varying style and this is by far the best for the money. Not only is it simple to use, but it is simple to assemble. Right out of the box it is 90% assembled. Another big plus is the length of the hitch receiver bar. This rack clears my bumper perfectly with my Hidden Hitch, which was a concern of mine while shopping racks. No hitch extension needed! This is also the best, and in my opinion the only way to rack a bike. The wheels are kept stable and the frame grip arms keep your bike nice and snug without causing any scuff to your bikes paint. The company recently changed the hitch pin to a screw in bolt, which some claim is not as easy due to the need for a wrench to get it on and off, but it does keep the rack much more sturdy and rattle free and also would make theft of the rack much more complicated to a would be thief. Just keep a 23mm socket in your vehicle and you'll be fine. I would recommend adding a large washer to the hitch bolt to get a better grip and keep the bolt from scratching your hitch.

This tire has turned out to be better than I thought it would be. It's light and easy-rolling. I use them on my mountain bike when riding the rails-to-trails that are regularly twig covered. No problems with flats thus far. I don't expect to have problems. Tires were delivered within a few days.

I bought these in 700x35c size for a 500 mile out and back tour of the entire KATY Rails to Trail in Missouri, and the (paved) Natchez Trace in Sept 2012. The KATY is surfaced with crushed limestone, called "pug", which contains tiny rock shards which puncture some tires and even shred others (I met a XC rider with delicate, lightweight XC tires which he had had to "boot" due to a large rip in the casing, in order to keep going). The KATY also has "goat head" puncture vine thorns, which cause slow leaks. I never had a flat; these tires never lost any air pressure (I also put Flat Attack sealant inside heavy duty tubes). These tires will take 90 psi, so they roll surprisingly well. On my loaded camping bike, I didn't really notice the extra weight of heavy duty tires anyway. I continued to use this bike as my commuter all winter, putting at least another 3,000+ miles on them. They show virtually NO WEAR! And they seem never to lose pressure. The only shortcoming they have is that they have hardly any grip in snow due to their almost slick tread. Once, trying to get home in a rare snowstorm I fell when my bike's front wheel suddenly washed out on some smooth concrete pavement covered in 3 inches of snow. But merely wet pavement does not seem to be a problem as they have sipes for moving water away. With any tire, you must be careful at the start of rain when it mixes with oil on the road. In that case any tire will lose grip. Overall these are superb indestructible loaded touring and commuting tires.

Sometimes when you order tubes for 24x3 tires, they seem to be for smaller tires and while you can pump them up to fill the tire, it makes them weak and prone to popping. These tubes are nice and big and fit my 24x3 Thick Brick tires great. Haven't ridden on them yet to know how durable but should be fine.

I chose this trailer because I have a very active two and a half year old little boy, and I was worried about the stabilty of one of those chairs that attach to the seat of your bike. I liked this trailer for its smaller size and that it is fairly light and seemed fairly sturdy, okay now here is how it did.

SET UP: was very easy, instructions where pretty clear, and most was commonsense. The only thing I had a little trouble with was loosening the bolt on the bike to attach the trailer, so if you have an older bike this part might require a little more muscle.

THE RIDE: I took the trailer on a 5 mile test drive today, the trail was paved, but very bumpy due to root growth breaking through the pavement, over wooden bridges, and up quite a few hills. The trailer did well over the bumps just don't take rough terrain fast. Turning the corners onto the bridges presented a challenge, I would have to dismount the bike and lift the back tire to slide the trailer enough to get it onto the bridge. If it where any larger I would not have been able to take it on the trail. Hills where impossible for me at this time, the slight inclines I could handle, but hills are tough on a bike to begin with, but add 40+ lbs and it becomes VERY hard, I have fairly strong legs but I had to walk the bike and trailer up the steep hills.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are doing any amount of hills your breaks on your bike will need to be replaced a lot sooner, it was hard to keep a decent pace with the trailer going down hill, and my brakes where screaming the whole way.

When you go up and down road curbs you have to take them SLOWLY, and when you kick off to start peddling use your right foot, the left will get caught under the hitch bar and you will end up with bruised heels and ankles and ruin your sneakers.

MAJOR CONS: I really don't like the way the front mesh is set up, the back tires kicks dirt up into the trailer and by the time we where done with our ride my son was covered with dirt, and I was on pavement the whole time. It does come with a clear rain cover but if you use that there are no vents and the inside gets way too hot.

Overall Im pleased with the cart, It does what i need it too. Also, on another review someone mentioned that you can't ajust the sag on the bottom, and you canthe straps are just under the "seat" you can tighten them up all the way and it creates more of a seat look instead of just a big dip. Though I am still trying to find out if it can recline, my sons head was bobbling everywhere once he fell asleep.

Also, I can't see two kids fitting and being comfortable for any length of time; unless your kids get along great and don't mind their shoulders touching.

I also can't see the material lasting long with regular use, it is a cheap plastic pretend canvas that looks a little flimsy, so long as it holds up it is a good deal, once mine gives out I will probably go for a better one, but this one is great for the price.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

Yes, "for the price". As with all my reviews, I want to qualify "what it is" vs. "what it isn't" so that potential buyers can put it in a frame of reference.

What it is:

Cheap, incredibly easy to assemble, solidly made. It'll last for a couple of years enough for 2 or 3 kids to go on semi-regular bike rides. It's comfortable for one 3-year-old or two smaller kids.

What it's not:

Not made of heavy canvas or burlap, not going to last as a hand-me-down for three, five, ten families to use, not good for applications other than pavement, gravel or smooth packed earth. With the super-simplified hub assembly and plastic wheels, it's not likely to last you a million miles.

Impressions:

The wheels "snap in" to the hub assembly so there's no magic to this; there's no solid axle, no suspension, just two greased necks that slide in, 'lock in' to metal apertures, and that's it. The axle 'nub' is metal; but it's not going to have heavy wheel bearings. It assembles unbelievably easily, so while I am a fairly mechanically inclined person and work on my own cars, plumbing and HVAC, I was impressed how simple this would be for a non-mechanically-inclined person to assemble.

I've taken about half a dozen rides with my 3-year-old son seated in the center in the back. Every time I make a 2-mile loop around the lake in the near-by city park, I get two to four comments/compliments from joggers with kids in strollers, other bikers, etc. One guy on a bike paced me and said that the trailer looked great and asked all about it where I got it, how much it cost, how well it works. It's not cheap junk, so you can put that out of your mind. For $80 it's a steal; I paid about $20 more and that was easily worth it.

However, the seating and sides are all plastic or polyester. Heavier kids will 'ride low' so if you go over rapid bumps or high roots, things you wouldn't really notice on a bike with 26" wheels, the kids could bump their bottoms. My son fits fine by himself, but when my daughter turns 1, it might be a bit of a squeeze to get a 1 year old and a 3 year old in there together. Realistically, I'm not sure I'd want to be dragging around something that's roomy for 2 kids anyway.

Finally, based on the mechanical construction, I would surmise that this one is good for occasional rides for 2-3 families with 2-3 kids. At most. That depends, too, on how big the kids are that you're carrying around, and how the trailer is stored (outside vs. in a garage). I guess that means, I wouldn't really expect to get any more than 1000 miles out of it, maybe double that if the rides are primarily with smaller kids, over smoother surfaces, and the trailer is stored in a garage.

Maybe I'm wrong. Who knows. My kids will probably retire before I actually accumulate 1,000 miles on my bike so... take it for what it's worth. Maybe this super-simplistic hub assembly will last longer than my old cars. :)

Best Deals for InSTEP Take 2 Double Bicycle Trailer

Ok first the good things about this trailer:

1. Price

2. Space for additional storage behind the seat which doesn't bother your kid(s)

3. Can fit two kids, but also has a "center" seat if it's only one kid

4. Easy to install on the bike

5. Light to carry

6. Good looking ( i love the blue color it comes in )

7. Anti-mosquitos and rain covers

The issues we see:

1. It has a soft bottom, so we're worried that he might hit something from the ground if we go over a rock or something. So we have to be really careful

2. It's wide, of course for two kids, which means its hard to go on small sidewalks.

3. It can get warm inside it, my baby was sweating today after a long ride, but we live in Miami so i guess its expected

The best thing is that it is lots of fun to go out with the little one with our bikes! totally worth it!

Set up was easy, but there were no specially instructions on filling the tires with air. I saw the recommended fill written on the side of tire to fill to 36 psi. I did as recommended, and 1 tube blew out while filling, the other blew 20 minutes later while just sitting there. I purchased 2 new tubes, and second attempt they both blew out at about 25 psi.

I called manufacturer who said never to fill above 25 and to ignore the recommend fill psi as stated on tires.

I later went to bike store to have a professional do this for me as I clearly am to dumb to use a bike pump or to know the pressure of the tires from the top of my head and to ignore instructions. The bike guy said this is just a problem with the plastic wheels. Most are just defected and need extra care to install and fill. He pointed out how the wheel is bent slightly and how it can lead to further blow outs. In the end after about 45 minutes, the bike care professional was able to fill the tires for me. He also gave me a warning that this was the last time that bike shop will be replacing and filling any tubes from wheels that were manufactured by this company.

avoid any plastic wheels.
