Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program First, this toy definitely requires the rider to be wearing a helmet and I would also strongly recommend knee and elbow pads. As the description states, the rider drives straight and then pulls on the bar which results in a wicked spin out. Beware however that the rider will spin quickly and if they are close to anything when they pull this bar (such as a parked car), they could spin right into it. My husband was able to assemble the trike without any difficulty. What I noticed right away was this toy was really light weight. Our 6 (almost 7) year old son thought it was incredibly cool to ride. Unfortunately however the handlebar assembly snapped literally in my son's hand while he was in spinout mode making the bike completely inoperable (lightweight materials do have their downside). This occurred after only about 3 uses. There is clearly a lot of force placed on the handlebar when the rider is spinning out. We contacted Radio Flyer directly and they were aware of this problem (they thought they had resolved it before marketing the product) and sent the appropriate replacement parts. It took a while to disassemble the bike to install the new handlebar however it was worth the effort because our son really loves this trike. All in all, a very enjoyable toy and major thumbs up to Radio Flyer for standing behind their product and quickly replacing the defective parts.

Update....After several more uses, all tires are wearing out very prematurely. This trike will be inoperable after a few more uses as the tires, which are nearly bald, will have absolutely no tread left. Considering how expensive this trike was, I'm actually disappointed in the overall durability of this toy. It's still a lot of fun, just don't expect to have more than two months of serious play time with it.

2nd update handle bar broke AGAIN. Had to send it back to the company for their quality assurance unit to inspect. They sent a replacement scooter (free) that our son loved.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The front wheel is hard plastic (no rusting) and the black tire portion is a soft plastic (I think they are using this tire on other current Radio Flyer products) The back wheels are the hard plastic wheels used on the old big wheels (and a R.F. wagon we currently have) but since the Tailspin has inline skate wheels to do the spinning this should not be a wear issue. The bike frame is all metal and very sturdy. The seat is plastic and adjustable with a screw driver and wrench. This trike is so sturdy I was even able to give it a very lame "mom spin" around the driveway much to my children's delight.

The directions to put the trike together were very clear and large. It took me an hour but I was being very careful. I was trying to make sure I had all of the washers and nuts in the proper place since my kids were going to be riding it. I am sure this will make it through many, many, years of play. Love it!

UPDATE: 2/2012 The handle bar rusted and snapped off at the shaft of the bike. It has only been left in the rain a few times since we got it but not enough times to warrant an irreparable break. Besides the rusted shaft the bike still looks new. What a shame.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Very fun bike for my 11 and almost 3 year old. The intended use is for 5 to 8 year olds but the bike is sturdy enough to hold my 11 year old boy and even though my 3 year old can't reach the pedals yet, she LOVES to pull on the spin handle and lift the bike up about 2 inches. The bike is easy to put together as my 11 year old did it all by him self with me only checking to ensure bolts were properly tightened. The spin lever works by lifting the bike off of the main back wheels and on to the smaller roller wheels making it spin out. I would say the only area of dissapointment is that the front wheels and main back wheels are plastic. If you are old enough to remember the 'Big Wheel', it is just like the wheels on those. It looks pretty odd to me as the rest of the bike has a sturdy metal frame and yet these cheap plastic wheels. I would have liked to see proper rubber tires.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program We got this bike and although the assembling wasn't the funnest, we gave it to my bfs 3 yr nephew and he has had a blast on this bike! We both grew up on Radio Flyer products and they are still as good of a product as they always have been. This is his first tricycle but it's been a fun learning experience for him even though he doesn't quiet fit on the bike itself, he has been able to push himself forward and peddle.

Bought this for our 5 year old and was hoping he was going to like it but had a bit of hesitation since he can ride a bike and may feel this was going backwards. It was quickly apparent that that wasn't going to be an issue once he figured out how to spin it out. Really a cool present and at the price, an awesome deal for a well built trike.

My son calls this his motorcycle (well, it is a Kawasaki, right?). First off... he is very hard on toys! So far the only thing that is suffering on his bike are the stickers. He is only 35" tall and he cannot really peddle the bike just yet. He scoots and knows his feet are suppose to be on the peddles. He does get a little frustrated but I swear that if we had gotten this when he was younger (he's 2) he would have never learned to walk because he's been riding it since his first diaper change this morning.

This is just a bike and it does not make any special sounds, requires no batteries, nor is there much distraction with flashy characters and massive decoration. Putting it together requires a hammer and a screwdriver. The hammer is very important because the rear wheel assembly is very tight. It wasn't greatly difficult but you did have to make sure you followed the instructions on this one. We put it together in 10 or 15 minutes. Probably 15 since the boy was trying to help. The space under the seat is actually pretty big. He has a play phone he keeps in it plus his cheerios cup and a sippy cup can fit. So far so good... but we did just get it. If it breaks I'll update this with a time of how long it lasted.

UPDATE! 04.03.2013

We just now passed this tricycle on to another little boy. At 4 years old my boy is now on a real bike and we just didn't need this one. It looks exactly as it did when we got it with only slight wear on the stickers. It was left out on our patio in the hot morning sun, rain, sprinklers, cold and such. It showed no fading nor brittleness of the plastic after nearly 2 years. Woohoo!

I purchased this toy for my 2.5yo because we bought him a bigger bike and he wasn't tall enough to use it (plus he hasn't quite figured pedaling out yet).

Regarding the child's size... my son is 38" tall at 2.5yo, he's about 30lbs, long legs and arms. If your child is SHORTER than this, he/she will be able to push with their feet no problems. When my son uses his feet to push him along, he hits the back wheels and it "jolts" a lot, but he can move it, he figured a way to take shorter steps.

Regarding the "slipping" of the wheels... yes, the wheels do slip; however, if you use it on the sidewalk a few times and the wheels get a little "rough" it seems to not slip as much, but its not enough to deter the child from using the pedals. An older kid rode the bike and it slipped a little for him going up a hill, but on the flat parts it didn't. My son of course tried it on the hardwood floors and it slipped BIG TIME.

Regarding the construction... I was able to put it together by myself in about 20-25 minutes, but I do read the instructions. I recommend putting the "seat" on AFTER you put the handles on... the angle of the screwdriver isn't "steep" enough when the seat is there, I had to put the seat part up in order to keep from stripping the screw. When putting the back wheels together, DEFINITELY have something "hard" under the opposite wheel when putting the little metal caps on. You definitely need a hammer, unless you are REALLY strong, but I still recommend the hammer.

Regarding tipping... we tried to "tip" it with our fingertips w/o my son on it and the front wheel turned ALL the way to the side and it didn't tip. My son rode it down a small hill, feet up (not on the pedals), and went to stop with his feet and almost tipped over. So, does it tip easily simply by riding it "correctly" no, not that I've seen (I think the weight in the back wheels keeps that from happening), but DO make your child wear a helmet in case they decide to do crazy things on it! :) Its low enough to the ground that if it does tip they shouldn't get TOO hurt, but you definitely don't want them bonking their head!

Overall the toy seems to be good construction, easy to put together, and fun for the kids, but you as the consumer need to be aware of your CHILD (their height, weight, and action on the bike).

We bought this trike for our 2-year-old for his birthday because he LOVES motorcycles. He calls it his motorcycle bike and rides it everywhere. It has been on dirt, gravel, grass, and of course, the sidewalk. The pedals are a little far out, but he can push it with his feet. He is pretty rough on it, he loves to go fast and turn corners even faster, but it has only tipped on him once. I don't think any bike could have withstood that turn :) The tires, pedals, and all parts have withstood his craziness amazingly well. It was pretty easy to assemble and well worth the purchase. We thought about getting him a radio flyer, and he ended up getting one from grandparents, but we all like this one better. The Radio Flyer tips fairly easily and he still can't reach the pedals on that one, but it's also higher so he can't push himself quite as well with his feet, either. This is THE trike to purchase-it will be well worth your money!

I bought this for my 2 year old son and this is of a very nice quality and I highly recommend this toy. While the manufacturer recommends for kids 24 months and older, my 2 year old son who is quite tall (3 feet, 95th percentile) can just reach the pedals and it will be few more inches of growth before he can pedal the trike.

I bought this for my 20 month old grandson. It is a little big for him (a stretch to the pedals) but it is made for 2 and up, so that was expected. It assembles easily and seems pretty durable. I am very happy, well worth the price!!

This grip shifter is definitely a step ahead of the X0 9 speed unit, but i believe way overpriced. Still its the only one of its kind, and SRAM knows it. I only use the 10 speed right side, and sold the left side unit, as the older X0 left side unit works fine and is only $30.

I recently bought this at Toys R Us for my four year old son and he's been having a blast with it. He's on the small side (36" and 30lbs) and he's had a lot of trouble reaching the pedals on some tricycles and small bikes with training wheels set on the lowest setting.

I read a lot of helpful reviews on all the trikes and bikes on Amazon.com and saw how this model got high marks. I wanted to make sure my son could reach the pedals and ride on it before I went ahead and bought one, so we headed to Toys R Us and hopped on a display model. He could reach the pedals whether we had in the tricylce or the big wheel/"chopper" mode and he biked around the display area with no problem. It was a proud moment for me, since all his little friends (who are all about a head taller than him) have no problem reaching pedals and riding their big-kid bikes around.

The store had none in stock so I asked if they'd sell me the display and they did. They wouldn't give me a discount since the display was pretty new but they usually charge $10 for in-store assembly, but they would just charge me the regular price. Not a great leap in customer service, but I didn't care. It was $59.00, which seems like a lot to me for a plastic bigwheel, but since we have THREE other trikes and bikes sitting in the garage that he can't ride or reach the pedals, it was worth every penny.

He's starting to build up more and more momentum each time he rides and it's very sturdy, no to mention so easy to twist and flip into the different positions.

My daughter received this trike for her 2nd birthday (in pink). It is really cute and she wanted to ride it immediately. Unfortunately, even though the manufacturer claims it is appropriate for a two year old, it is way too big. She can just reach the pedals, but not turn them. She is in the 98% in height so I can't imagine there are many two year olds who this would work for. Buy a smaller trike for a two year old.

My son loves this trike, however after converting it to a trike and adjusting the seat back and forth between the 3 available positions, he began complaining that it was hurting his lower back, he asked me to take the seat off, the next morning I discovered while giving him his bath that he had 3 nasty looking bruises on his lower back from the seat rest. Just something everyone should be aware of.

My 2 year old LOVES this bike. It is a great size for a 2 year old. The bike is kind of tall compared to other trikes for this age group, so he feels like he is riding a "big boy" bike.

My husband cursed a little more than usual while assembling it, but overall the assembly process looked easy enough to me.

I bought this for my nephew, who would then pass it on to his brother & then my neice and whoever else is born. We tried it as a Big Wheel, but my nephew's legs were not long enough yet (he just turned 3 this summer), so my brother in law changed it to a trike & it works great! We took it to the boardwalk in Rehoboth and he just had a blast going down the boardwalk, coming back my Mom & I held it (lol!) but it was light enough and no problems. It is really a great item & would highly recommend it and easy to switch back & forth (of course I don't do that, but I didn't hear any complaints from my brother-in-law so all is good).
