Vittoria Zaffiro Pro Home Trainer Fold Tire

I'm using the 700c x 23mm version of this tire with a Trek Pilot 5.0 and Shimano WH-R500 wheelset on a Travel Trac Mag+ trainer (gravity style, not the old A-frame) with 5 resistance levels. Thus far it's holding up quite well and running cool. After 3 hours of moderate intensity interval workouts that vary the gearing from 39x19 recovery spins to 52x15 @ 100rpm intensity, the flash down the middle of the center tread ridge (the tread mold parting line) is still visibly present on the tire. In short, the tire is relatively quiet and doing exactly what it's supposed to be doing. The bike drive train and a very soft whine from the mag resistance unit are noisier than the tire. I hope what follows helps others with using this tire, as mine is clearly performing as it should and not shredding, prematurely wearing or otherwise disintegrating.

Tire Mounting:

Mounting this tire out-of-box new, as with all the other Vittoria (Zaffiro and Rubino), and Michelin fold-ups I've used was initially tight and took a little work to get the last few inches of the 2nd bead over the rim edge. Fold-ups in general have a reputation for being rather tight mounting when brand new. Even so I still got it on without resorting to a tire iron (which, for me, invariably snake bites the tube). Out of the box, fold-ups are pretty flattened and getting one onto a rim is much easier if a few minutes are spent to get it round and shaped more like a mounted tire by folding the beads together and squeezing it all the way around several times. Also helps mounting (without puncturing the tube) if the tube is slightly inflated and kept well centered in the rim without allowing it to twist or kink when seating the second bead, starting at the stem and slowly working around both directions to directly opposite the stem. Patience wins the game in new tire mounting. A tiny bit of soap on the rim at the end can help too (hand dish washing or bar soap) by reducing the friction of the tire rubber against the metal rim. When you eventually remove this fold-up and mount it again you'll find the second and successive times around easier as the bead stretches slightly and it tends to retain the shape of a mounted tire (unless you fold it up like it was when new and store it for a while).

Proper Tire Inflation:

Inflation pressure is important to proper tire wear. The range on the sidewall for this tire is 100-145 lbs. How low you can go to the bottom end of this range depends on how much you plus the bike weigh. Most manufacturers consider the lightest riders to be 110 lbs or less, and they are the ones who can get away with lowest recommended inflation pressure. Proper inflation pressure should increase with rider weight. The manufacturers consider the heaviest riders to be 180 lbs or more, and they should be using the highest recommended inflation pressures. The basic principle of rider weight and inflation pressure is how much the tire cross-section is deformed at the roller contact point (or pavement for road tires) by the rider plus bike total weight. The greater the deformation, the more the tire will heat up as it's rolling. If the heat gets too great, the tire will fail as the rubber tread shreds off of the fabric casing (was told this is the glue between the rubber and casing failing from overheating). Those thinking they'll get a softer ride with lowest recommended tire pressure are only deluding themselves to some extent. A 100 lb rider at lowest inflation pressure will have about the same ride as a 200 lb rider at highest inflation pressure as the range of tire deformation occurring while riding will be about the same for both. As with road riding, tire pressure should be checked at least once per week; I do it twice per week. Tires will lose pressure on their own as the air molecules very slowly seep through the inner tube.

Proper Trainer Resistance Roller Pressure (against the tire):

Pressure of the trainer roller against the tire is also important to minimizing tire wear. The small diameter resistance roller can deform a tire more than flat pavement will. Bikes are mounted in traditional "A-frame" style trainers by clamping in the rear axle at the top of the A-frame and then forcing the resistance roller against the tire with a jackscrew by tightening it with a large knob. The greater the force, the greater the tire deformation, and the harder it will be to pedal the bike. Some might think this is a way of adjusting or tweaking the resistance, and it certainly will, but it's also a fabulous way to greatly increase tire wear, and possibly induce tire failure, if it's cranked down tighter than it needs to be. The force of the roller against the tire should be no more than needed to keep the tire from slipping on the roller during moderate acceleration. Those cranking up from a slow 39x19 spin to an immediate all-out 130 rpm cadence, 53x15 high gear sprint frequently might need *slightly* more roller force against the tire, but I don't know of any proper interval training that does that radical a cadence and gearing change. I'm fortunate to have one of the newer gravity style without a resistance roller force adjustment. Rider plus bike weight provide the force between the tire and roller. The cheapest trainers have only have one resistance level and these are intended for the casual rider who wants some exercise during cold and bad weather, not for serious indoor winter training. Increasing roller pressure to increase resistance is not recommended and will lead to premature tire wear (ultimately tire failure if cranked up too much). If you cannot get enough resistance for effective training with trainer and bike gearing, the proper solution is a different trainer, one that provides sufficient resistance.

I do not usually write reviews, but I think these tires have been getting a bad rap. I am on my second set, with a 3rd set awaiting. I have literally thousands and thousands of miles on these tires. Yes they bleed some rubber. BUT I keep them inflated at 120 psi and find they bleed very little. I am using them on rollers every day of winter, and every rainy day, windy day, or at night. I check the pressure twice a week, and have gotten some crazy time out of them. I definitely think they like higher pressure. They just do not feel right when I go down to 100 psi. Hope this helps. This is my first trainer tire, so I don't have another tire to compare it to, but I've ridden it for 3 weeks now, 2-3x/week on the trainer for ~60mins each ride. Tire has performed well so far with no issues, and I take the tire off once a week for an outdoor ride and have had no issues taking it off or putting it back on. The only thing I think worth noting is that it leaves some rubber streaks on the trainer that I have to scrape off. Not sure if this is normal for a trainer tire to do so, and I don't have it cranked down, just tight enough to make contact w/ the wheel. I would buy this tire again for trainer use. For reference, I use a Cyclops Fluid2. I think I paid shipped, so it's about 30% cheaper than the Conti yellow tire.

I love my EWheels trike. I got it a few months ago and yes, it took about 10 days but its sent on a truck from another state..

Anyway, I had one issue and I called service and within 24 hours they called me back and a nice man walked me through the "fix".

I got the trike because of balance issues and its perfect for me. I take it to the store and recently road it on the boardwalk next to the beach.

I love my trike.

My ew88 was not shipped until almost 10 days after the shipper, EWheels out of Arizona said it was shipped. I wasformed by Amazon that the shipper cojuld not be tracked. WRONG! eWheels only said that so they could be paid early. When it was shipped, it was by Estes Express and I gtracked it all the way. The second prob lem was also with shipping. The tryke was held in Orlando, 70 miles fromthe final delivery point from it's arrival on Friday, until Wednesday of the next week! Now as for the tryke. Once uncrated, I charged the battery. Once charged I went for a ride, a short one, as the gears onthe seconday drive fell off, causing me tolose the chain on the secdary drive and also to lose all pedal power. I called Ron Spurlock of Medical Department Stores only to be told he wojuld hav e ewheels cantact me for a resolution. That was 10 days ago. Since that time I heard what I expected to hear . . . nothing! Every body got their money, that is wh6y ewheels billed it 10 days before it shipped, to they get paid before hand and don't worry about customer service. The last thing I HEARD from ewheels, a Steve, was that "if I didn;t like his service I could stick it where the sun don't shine, I got my money!" So,in order to have a ridable tryle, something Medical Department Stores and eWheels couldn't care less about, I took mytryke to a local shop to have the tryke components inspected and repaired. They did at a cost of $250. And gthe reverse still does not operate.

Steve, at ewheels,during his rantings said he had sold over 100 tyrykes in the last month. That is doubtful, because if he give the service to those others he gave tro me, there wouldhave been a lynching in Phoenix,Arizona! As a remedy for the shipping or lack thereof. When the vendor states the theitem has been shipped require that they supply you with a PRO number and the truckers name. It wojuld be an easy task to find out what is going on,especially if the trucker's namechanges likemine did, from unknown small tricker to Estes Express. No Payment to the vender until PRO submitted. That would also stop the billing ofthe customer 10 days before the item is shippe.

I did not buy my wife's trike from an Amazon vendor but thought I would write a review to warn others. I bought mine from High5scooters (a non-Amazon vendor). The supplied seat was terrible. I replaced it with a quality one from Amazon. Actually I thought the trike was pretty well made. It does have a high center of Gravity (CG) and will tip over on turns easily if you take them too fast. My wife tipped over taking a turn too fast (in spite of my warnings to her), the trike fell on top of her and she suffered a fractured skull, concussion, broken cheekbone and broken arm. She was very luck and is doing well. None of this was the fault of the trike, it was operator error.

The problem I had was with High5scooters. They never answer the phone in my experience I always got voice mail and they never returned my messages. They also do not answer emails. I actually was putting the charge in dispute when when the trike finally arrived after weeks of waiting. After my wife tipped it over the fuse flew when I tried to ride it home. I called (voice mail only again from both parties) and emailed High5scooters and the EW importer/manufacturer Ewheels Mobility Scooter asking about replacement fuses. of course none of the phone messages or emails were answered. I found the fuses on-line from another vendor and ordered 5 of them for about $14.00 including shipping.

I first tried to find a shop that would work on electric tricycles/bicycles. There are none in the Dallas Ft.Worth area. I could ship it back to the vendor for repair at great expense of crating and shipping Since I am an electronics tech with extensive knowledge and experienced in industrial AC and DC motor operation and repair I decided to attempt to fix it myself. I quickly located the problem by inspection. The front cable going into the motor had been badly abraded. It is a short pigtail that plugs in on one end and is hard-wired into the motor. Since the manufacturer and vendor will not return emails or phone calls, it will be very difficult to obtain a replacement cable as the original is not repairable. I hope the manufacturer will eventually return my calls and/or emails: if not, I have an $1100.00 pile of trash.

I give the trike 4 stars on apparent quality. I give the vendro and manufacturer 0 stars for customer service for an average of 2 stars.

DO NOT BUY THIS TRICYCLE UNLESS YOU HAVE LOCAL SUPPORT. IF IT BREAKS, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET IT SERVICED.

I have to agree with the negative reviews on this product that I've seen on Amazon. I purchased this trike in March 2012 and have nothing but trouble with it. It is a cheap Chinese made product without quality control. As previous reviews have stated their support is a joke. YOU, THE BUYER, ARE THE SUPPORT! Problems I have had are as follows, the pedals broke first because they are cheap plastic ones, the support center did send me some pedals, the same plastic type, I threw them away and went to WalMart and bought some good metal pedals. The rear basket does not fit to the frame well, fortunately there are holes drilled in the clasps so I was able to use cotter pins to hold down the basket. The front tire that came with it must have been a bad spare because shortly after receiving it, I had to replace it and the tube when the tire blew out. The fuse overheated and melted part of the plastic box containing the battery. I had to remove the burnt out fuse holder and replace it and the fuse. Later the battery connection broke off and I had to solder a good replacement connection to get the bike running again. Finally the bike literally broke. I was not racing or going fast (Thank God I wasn't), just making a left turn after the light changed and the frame broke throwing me up against the curb. It cost me $117.70 to have it welded and a lot of aggravation trying to deal with E Wheels Support (still haven't been reimbursed). Except for the plastic pedal I have not gotten any support even though the website states the EW 88 is guaranteed for 1 year. My advice is DON"T BUY FROM E WHEELS or their suppliers. Update Oct 18, 2012, finally received a check from E Wheels for the welding I had done ($117.70). However, now I have a NEW problem, the bearing on the offset axle went out. I noticed when riding I heard a thunking noise and upon investigation it was the bearing. My calls to E Wheel Support have gone unanswered.

Item was back-ordered, which was not a big problem. But the frame was welded in a 'twist' which made steering impossible. The manufacturer did call us promptly,and we agreed that we'd have a local welder fix it if they would pay for the cost. Got it fixed locally, but the 'refund' check came about 4 weeks after they promised to send it. We are disappointed in the overall quality of the product, but since having the frame repaired and getting a more comfortable seat, we are enjoying it.

I recently bought this at Toys R Us for my four year old son and he's been having a blast with it. He's on the small side (36" and 30lbs) and he's had a lot of trouble reaching the pedals on some tricycles and small bikes with training wheels set on the lowest setting.

I read a lot of helpful reviews on all the trikes and bikes on Amazon.com and saw how this model got high marks. I wanted to make sure my son could reach the pedals and ride on it before I went ahead and bought one, so we headed to Toys R Us and hopped on a display model. He could reach the pedals whether we had in the tricylce or the big wheel/"chopper" mode and he biked around the display area with no problem. It was a proud moment for me, since all his little friends (who are all about a head taller than him) have no problem reaching pedals and riding their big-kid bikes around.

The store had none in stock so I asked if they'd sell me the display and they did. They wouldn't give me a discount since the display was pretty new but they usually charge $10 for in-store assembly, but they would just charge me the regular price. Not a great leap in customer service, but I didn't care. It was $59.00, which seems like a lot to me for a plastic bigwheel, but since we have THREE other trikes and bikes sitting in the garage that he can't ride or reach the pedals, it was worth every penny.

He's starting to build up more and more momentum each time he rides and it's very sturdy, no to mention so easy to twist and flip into the different positions.

My daughter received this trike for her 2nd birthday (in pink). It is really cute and she wanted to ride it immediately. Unfortunately, even though the manufacturer claims it is appropriate for a two year old, it is way too big. She can just reach the pedals, but not turn them. She is in the 98% in height so I can't imagine there are many two year olds who this would work for. Buy a smaller trike for a two year old.

My son loves this trike, however after converting it to a trike and adjusting the seat back and forth between the 3 available positions, he began complaining that it was hurting his lower back, he asked me to take the seat off, the next morning I discovered while giving him his bath that he had 3 nasty looking bruises on his lower back from the seat rest. Just something everyone should be aware of.

My 2 year old LOVES this bike. It is a great size for a 2 year old. The bike is kind of tall compared to other trikes for this age group, so he feels like he is riding a "big boy" bike.

My husband cursed a little more than usual while assembling it, but overall the assembly process looked easy enough to me.

I bought this for my nephew, who would then pass it on to his brother & then my neice and whoever else is born. We tried it as a Big Wheel, but my nephew's legs were not long enough yet (he just turned 3 this summer), so my brother in law changed it to a trike & it works great! We took it to the boardwalk in Rehoboth and he just had a blast going down the boardwalk, coming back my Mom & I held it (lol!) but it was light enough and no problems. It is really a great item & would highly recommend it and easy to switch back & forth (of course I don't do that, but I didn't hear any complaints from my brother-in-law so all is good).
