If you are buying one of these CR18 rims you probably are upgrading to alloy rims on your 3-speed. You don't have many choices -either this or change the wheel size to something else like 700c or 650b. But you might have brake reach or fender clearance issues if you change to a different rim size.

The CR18 has the exact same ERD as the Raleigh 3-speeds and also many Schwinns that use the Sturmey Archer hub. This means you can re-use your old spokes and just swap rims over. This isn't really very hard either -just tape the new rim to the old one and loosen up the spokes without taking any all the way off. Then swap each spoke one by one over to the new rim. Make sure you have the spoke holes in the right orientation (L & R holes) and the rim "handedness" correct. Google Sheldon Brown's wheelbuilding page and it'll be made clear. If you are ordering new spokes you can measure your old spokes to know what size you need.

The stopping power of the CR18 over a steel wheel is considerably more confidence inspiring in the wet. The wheels will shed a few pounds too -which is rolling weight. The bike will seem lower geared in first because it starts that much easier.

Pros:

* Lightweight.

* Excellent wet braking power.

* Polished to look more like the chrome steel of old 3-speed rims.

* Drilled for Schrader valve so your 3-speed doesn't look funky.

* Well-made rim that trues up nicely.

Cons:

* Getting a 590 tire on this 590 rim isn't so easy. It's a bear -really, really tough actually. Have good tire levers ready (Pedro's, Park, or a Kool-stop tire jack.)

* This rim is narrower than what came on many old 3-speeds. Looks a little funky at first but you will get used to it. If you have a double-ended Raleigh cable you are going to have to figure out something since it won't tighten down far enough on the narrower rim.

* Ugly Sun-Riggle sticker that looks out of place on a vintage rim. Luckily it peels right off without too much fuss.

I bought a pair (40-hole for the rear and 32 hole for the front) for my '54 Raleigh. I liked them so much that I bought another pair for a '71 I am refurbishing.

40-hole rim fits the back wheel of older Raleighs with the Sturmey-Archer hub. Some newer Raleighs have 36f/36r so count your spokes!

Much as I adored Smart Wool (the look, the feel, the great assortment), every single pair has worn out in the heel and all within one single year. And I own about 45 pairs of 'em!! Now I have the makings for a quite expensive wool sock quilt. Great.

But this year I discovered these Darn Tough socks, and decided I would take them up on their challenge of a lifetime guarantee. Hah! We laughed out loud in the store as we read the terms. They have no idea what my heels are capable of! But they have made it fun and comfy for me during this test-phase; the sizing is perfect, the wool is just the right thickness, and the patterns are nice. I just wish there was more variety. And they do tend to twist around my feet (I go stocking-footed a lot), but not quite as much as Smart Wool.

I will revisit this review with an update after a year, since that was the literal break-point with my old Smart Wools.

Update: 11/03/2012 Still going! 11 months later my Darn Toughs are as thick as the day I bought them, with no wearing out in the heels. Although I loved Smart Wool for many years, I have to say Darn Tough is my sock of choice now.

The socks are great. Like the fact that they're thin, but still warm. Wore some on a trip in Europe with lots of walking, and my feet were fine.

I love these socks! No seam in the toes is great and they certainly seem like they will hold up for a long time. The wool doesn't cause itching and the socks are warm without being too heavy. I bought two more pairs after I wore these a few times.

Thi HRM is a nice piece of equipment for yourself while riding hard it just cruising. I also brought the cadence sensor to complete the system, and everything works great. I rode with it in the rain, I didn't really want to but was forced as I was about 8miles down the trail,and it held up great. I am very pleased with this product.

I'm posting this mostly as a tip for others who may have gotten this and found it too tall. We love our little GoGo bike but my daughter couldn't straddle it and touch the floor when she got it for her second birthday. However, I just discovered that if you install the frame upside down [so it curves up to the fork] and then install the seat in the highest position it works _perfectly_ and looks like a little low-rider. I wish I'd tried this months ago so she could have had it all summer. Now she's just getting the hang of it as we're getting ready for snow.

Some of these appear to have wood laminate wheels, which makes 0 sense to me. Wheels will get wet, and plywood will rapidly deteriorate in those conditions. The one with spokes looks fine, and my baby loves it!

Discount ULTRA BIKE CLUB, ANTI-THEFT LOCK

Anybody wanting to protect their bikes should go with this bad boy; comes with three locks, which is handy for a notorious key-loser, like myself. The key/lock is intricate & I don't see your everyday lock-picker being able to figure it out fast enough to get away with a bike unnoticed. It's super easy to slip on & off, & tightens to leave less room for a crow bar to fit in & work it off (I don't even think that'd work, this thing seems so sturdy...) the 1st half of the device locks deep into the 2nd part, unlike the kryptonite bike locks, which have such a shallow point of connection. I've had two bikes stolen before with different locks, and four months in, I'm having great success with this lock! All in all worth the price :-)

Good lock, easy to use. The first time I used it, my husband and I were together handled two bikes without any problem. The adjust-ability is nice but I wish it had included a mounting bracket. I'm not quite sure how I want to carry it, other than in a backpack.
