Review of CoPilot Limo Bicycle Child Seat

I was given a bike seat as a hand-me-down (another brand..). Didn't like it due to safety reasons so I decided to research online the best child seat while also minding price as much as possible. I narrowed it down to this one seat.

PROS:

1. Very sturdy seat mounts to a free mounting rack that is supplied. It fastens securely to the mount and is also tethered to the bicycle seat bar as well. Very smart idea.

2. Secures infant very well your child is secured down by the ribbon that goes over their chest as well as the horizontal bar that further secures them in the seat. There are even velcro ties if you want to tie down their feet if need be.

3. Free bike rack!

4. Interior of seat is very well cushioned for easy riding for your child.

5. Literally seconds to remove the seat. Don't be concerned it requires a few steps to accomplish this.

6. The seat is quite high so as to keep your child safe while riding.

7. Middle of the road price.

CONS:

1. Shoddy supplied screws. They easily will strip if you are not careful. I actually discarded mine and used some other ones that I had that worked (same thread and length).

2. Instruction manual leaves a lot to be desired.

IN SUMMARY:

If you are looking for a seat that is safe and secure, not too costly and is great looking then I highly recommend this child bicycle seat.

I just installed this seat today and took my 3 year old out for a short test ride before it started raining. While I don't have experience with day-to-day usage yet, I would like to comment on the instruction manual for those parents considering this product and hopefully the manufacturer will read this, too. In short, the manual is unclear from step 1 onwards. There's no explanation of what a "seat stay" or a "braze-on" are, so if you're unfamiliar with these terms, you may have difficulty with installing this seat. More and bigger illustrations would be appreciated. It took me about 2 hours, mainly because I had to take the rear wheel of the bike off because there's not enough room between the smallest cog and the inside of the dropout. The manual also mentions a CG (Center of Gravity) hash mark that's supposed to help with alignment, but I couldn't find it.

One side note: I almost bought this seat from craigslist. "Almost" because the seller was honest enough to tell me that she doesn't have the installation manual anymore, and warned me about the installation difficulty.

I went to various bicycle shops to check out 3 different child seats (Limo, Taxi and one whose name I don't remember) and like this the most. Despite the comment above, which is just a one-time hassle, I still think this is among the best seat on the market. Time should tell whether it's worth the price. I also considered the iBert Safe-T Front Mounted Child Bicycle Seat, which I couldn't find in any local bike shop. One salesperson told me they don't carry that product because they feel front mounted seats are just not safe for children. Most accidents are head-on collision and children are better protected when they sit behind an adult.

Today, after clipping a bush on a bumpy sidewalk, I lost balance and my bike fell on it's side with me on it and my 13 mos old in the Co-Pilot. I struggled to gain balance, but couldn't and took the brunt of the fall on my knee and my poor twisted back. After a panic, I jumped up and quickly assessed my toddlers condition. There she sat snuggly in the Co-Pilot, with her pink bunny Giro Infant Helmet (which I also highly recommend) without a clue that anything was wrong. The seat's lap bar and harness held her in place and not a single inch of her came near the pavement. Thank God! She just looked at me like I was crazy. LOL!

So despite a funky installation manual and some tweaking to accommodate the bike I had, this product is worth every penny. Its' comfy, quality, safety and ease of use are worth 5 stars. I hope no one else has to learn that the way I did though! Ha.

We got this for our three year old, who is 35 pounds. He fits in it with room to spare. It reclines backwards to allow him even more room between him and his mom, who rides with him. The feet strap in so they don't get caught in the spokes. The sides and back have openings which allow our son to look all around him. This is our first bike seat, and it wasn't cheap, but it is really, really nice.

We've had this seat for a while. I always thought it was a good product until today. Now I think its a great product. After about 10 miles of cycling today, the rear wheel on my bike dislodged (no idea how it got loose) and the frame and derailer came down on the spokes. It felt like the back wheel had seized but it was partly sideways and I couldnt control the bike. So we hit the ground. I immediately turned around to see my four year old sitting quite unperturbed in the back. The combination of the seat belt, the guard and the sides of the bike seat, coupled with the helmet meant that everything worked as it should and she didnt have a scratch.

Our bike is junk -but Im keeping the seat!

Any complaints? its small but I find the velcro foot restraints very annoying to get on/off. And there is a thumb-trapping danger when removing the seat, which I do a lot as we take the bikes on the car to go to fun destinations.

I bought this wheel for my nephews scooter that broke an axle and need replacing, I got and it looked way to small for the tire and iner tube to fit on it. The with of the rim for the wheel is very narrow compared to the mag wheel that it came with. My was I surprised when it did fit, was amazed just wow. (16 x 2.125)

I how ever did have some difficulty getting the wheel on the scooter, but with a litter widening of the back where the nuts go. it fix very well.

Buy Michelin Lithion 2 Road Tire

I ride about 60 miles a week and came off 700x23 low grade tires. I kept getting flats on potholes and glass, upgrading the tubes helped but didn't eliminate the issue. I ride quite a bit at night and there's nothing more irritating than getting a flat in the pitch dark, the swarms of mosquitoes were appreciative though.

Oddly, you can actually tell the difference with the slightly wider tire, but if it lasts longer, it's totally worth it. They handle fine at my 15 to 20mph speeds, admittedly I don't do any hard cornering so I can't vouch for how they handle in serious cornering but average riding they seem just fine.

My local bike shop was asking twice what they cost here.

UPDATE: After two months and grabbing the side of pavement, hitting potholes and death grooves, I haven't had a single flat with these tires. When I bought them I also picked up a couple of Avenir tubes to go with them so the combination seems to be working out well.

Great tire. I've ridden on Michelins for awhile and needed to replace them due to wear. The tires wear well and the Lithion 2 tires are light but not too light as to appear to give up durability. I ride on rough roads and these tires can take it as well as give great traction. I recommend this product.

*Update* 2000 miles later these tires are still doing well. I am going to replace because I'm afraid of a blowout on a fast descent.

I ride for exercise/enjoyment about 100 miles a week in San Diego where roads are very dirty (lots of thorns, glass, metallic debris) and broken up despite this being America's Finest City. My old tires were shot and I was getting daily puncture (not pinch) flats. I did a ton of research online and simply could not find anything that explicitly said what I wanted: decent puncture resistance while not weighing a ton/being a total slug on performance for a fair value. The Michelin Lithion 2 description seemed the closest to that so gave them a try.

Things were perfect for the first couple of weeks fine on weight for a training tire, nice grip around turns, and no flats on the same routes I usually ride. This last week got a random puncture in the back from a large staple so no foul there. But next ride got a puncture on the other tire from a VERY small/narrow thorn that would be impossible to see from riding position. Realize this is just two flats in 3 weeks but feel like soon I'll be right back to reviewing tubes and tires to find the right combination for where and how I ride. I went a year without a flat on my last tires and tubes which were stock on the bike and absolutely nothing special so was really hoping these new tires would give me at least several weeks before seeing flats again from tiny thorns.

I have put about 700 hard miles on these tires. Roads here are very rough, with lots of debris. In my first three years living here I replaced 6 tubes and blew out three tires. I even destroyed a kevlar Hutchinson tire which was heavier and more expensive than these. Rolling resistance seems average with these tires, and tread-wear is minimal. No flats since switching to these tires, and I have had them for about a year.

Ok, so I am not sure where to start, so I'll try to give an amended version of the story. I bought new tires and tubes for my road bike because I was planning to start riding more in the mornings (predawn) instead of running (28 YO with inflammatory arthritis and running is bad on my joints). So, talked the wife into letting me get some new rubber. Settled on these because they seemed like a good balance of value and quality. Also read a lot of reviews here and @ nashbar about durability. My main concern with riding that early is the risk of getting a flat and being stranded. I ride 6 mi to a bike path, ride 10-20 miles on the path and 6 miles home. The path is very debris-free but you never know what you'll find between there and home. Last thing I want to do is repair a flat in the dark. I guess I should have done more research.

On my first ride, I got a flat .5 mi from home. Located the thorn and left it in there, pump tire up and made it home. 2 rides later, rode through glass and slashed a 1/4" gash in the tire, flattening it almost immediately. I was able to repair it and the tire still holds the tube (after a little superglue stitching). These two road debris incidents may have resulted in a flat regardless, but I was hoping for a little more durability.

I have since found the gatorskins (which will probably be my next tire) and tube liners (which I just ordered and will be installing tomorrow) to prevent flats.

They do ride beautifully though. I have a Specialized road bike (commuter bike, nothing too serious) and these tires really smoothed my ride out. I've always been timid in corners with my original tires and can now power through them with confidence and can just 'feel' that I am glued to the road. In the end, I am hoping the two flats were a fluke and that I'll be able to get 3000+ miles out of these. Maybe I'll update after I get more miles under them.

What's that you say? You want to haul 8 gallons of milk and still have room for the cereal too? Yup, that's how big this basket it. The dimensions listed in the add are for EACH basket there's one on each side. So if you want to haul a LOT of stuff, are not counting grams of weight and don't mind a little installation niggles: This is the basket for you.

The baskets are built like a tank. The wires are all welded to each other, are all zinc plated steel and are not a small gauge. These baskets will not break, ever, period.

UPDATE Jan19,2012: after daily commuting for 2+ years the baskets did not break but if you routinely carry more than a few pounds over rough roads, the wires on the inside of the basket start to bend slightly around the diagonal support bar. Eventually they bent enough to consume the 10mm clearance to the bike frame seatstay and the front inside of the basket started rubbing on the frame. I zip-tied a piece of inner tube between the wires and the frame to prevent damage. Eventually I zip tied a piece of aluminum bar stock between the basket wire and the support bar + seatstay to distribute the load on the wires.

Did I mention you can haul a lot of stuff? ....right....

Installation wasn't too bad, but is not for the mechanical inept. If you're not familiar with bike mechanicals, don't have a bunch of tools and/or aren't comfortable modifying the basket, it's hardware or the bike itself I'd advise getting a bike shop to do it. Don't be scared off, it's not that bad just know you're not getting yourself into a pure bolt on device. Likely it will require some finaggaling. I installed in ~20minutes, but I'm pretty handy and have all the tools and then some. I did have to bust out a drill and enlarge the holes in my bike's rear hanger bracket, but w/ a good HSS bit and some cooling oil it was not a major setback. The rest of the install went smoothly. The basket is unwieldy so a second pair of hands to hold it while you slip in the screws is greatly appreciated.

You may have to bend the upper brackets to fit the bike frame and keep the basket level, if so, bust open a can of spinach. I tell you the wire gauge is big and the rods are hard to bend. Lucky for me the basket installed level, no bending required.

UPDATE Jan19,2012: I used this basket on 2 bikes. On the second bike I did have to bend the rods down slightly. I assure you it was hard to bend them, a cheater pipe comes in handy!

The hardware that comes with the basket is the bare minimum to do the install. There are no extra bits like someone else mentioned. The basket did NOT come with install instructions, but those can be downloaded from WALD directly. The instructions may help, but I warn you they are not thorough by any stretch of the imagination. Basically, you're left on your own to figure it out. Also, the screws are low quality grade-nothing hardware. It would be easy to cross-thread, strip or otherwise damage them during installation. The nuts are all self-locking with a captured nylon insert so make sure you tighten them fully they will be hard to tighten, but you should know when they are fully seated.

Truth be told, many rear racks are kinda tricky to install so this is not so abnormal. The rack manufacturers have to content w/ a bazillion variants of bike frames and they try to accommodate best they can, but bottom line is it will only fit so many bikes w/o some modification or other.

Once installed, the bike looks rather handsome, like a freshly painted and washed pickup. The basket (being basically one solid welded piece) does not rattle like other piece-meal folding-basket paniers. Good stuff. I uploaded some pictures so you can see how it installs, the size of the beast and how it looks on the bike.

In summary: 4 stars for a well made item w/ a somewhat difficult installation. PS: Thx Amazon! free shipping and fast delivery sweet.

UPDATE Jan19, 2012. I used this rack commuting daily for a couple years on 2 different bikes. It's a great product. It is heavy, you really feel it going up hills. Just recently my bike was stolen so now I'm starting from scratch all over again :-( In reflection, I loved the size and convenience of the basket, but this time I'm going for something lighter, like an Aluminum tube rack with removable soft-sided pannier bags. This way I can throw my laptop, lock, lunch, etc in the panniers and when I get to the train station, sling the panniers and all contents (except for lock of course!) over my shoulder and away I go.

My personal record for stuff carried with this basket? 2 gallons of milk, 1L of OJ, 2 bottles of wine, loaf of bread, some fruit + veggies + other small items, and a 40lb bag of dog-food bungeed to the top! I don't recommend it; the bike was a little unstable but the point is, it can be done with this basket and none other on the market!

My local bike shop attached this basket for me when I bought it from them today. As a college student with lots of class supplies, I needed good, fast transportation for me and all my stuff.I opted for the large size, but I was hoping they wouldn't be too wide due to traffic.

I really wasn't expecting the transformation: Before, it was an aqua and neon pink early 90's relic. After a new and very sturdy basket, I realized that I have a very fun-looking, useful two-wheeled utility vehicle with massive trunk space--for a bike.

You can't see it well in the diagram, but between the two baskets is a simple rack you can use to strap even MORE things to, so buying this basket is actually like buying three transport options at once!

From what I understand, rear mounted twin baskets are also the safest sort to get due to the location of extra weight and the ability to balance it between the two sides.

The baskets are big and roomy without being ridiculously wide (though they are not slim!), and on my sports bike I barely noticed the difference in weight while riding empty. The baskets are heavy, though, and can make transporting a bike by car a pain. There is enough room to throw a backpack or other large bag with in on one side and some more books, a canvas, and other things on the other.

The baskets ride level to my rear wheel, and don't get in the way of the rear reflector. I was afraid for a while that the build of the bike frame ad the basket wouldn't allow it to attach behind the seat properly, but I was wrong. I fit perfectly.

After years of not touching it, I feel like I've rediscovered my bike. These baskets are sure to turn "just another bike" into a gas saving tool.

Got an adult-sized bike? If you have lots of stuff to tote, then get these! You can't go wrong.

I have used these baskets every day for the past 2 years to lug my books and laptop back and forth from home to law school and have hand no problems with the baskets. They are a great size they can hold several textbooks and a lunch bag in one side and a laptop in the other side without any problem.

My only complaint about these baskets (as I'm sure people would complain about all baskets) is that they are very heavy. I don't know how much they weigh, but I would guess it adds a good 10-15 pounds to my bicycle wihtout anything in them, which is a pain. Then again, loading the bike with books and a computer adds 10 pounds as well, so no worries overall.

I came into one of these super baskets from a local shop and haven't been disappointed. To say that this basket has allowed my old-school three speed Raleigh to go above and beyond the call of duty would be an understatement. As others have commented, the one-piece construction makes a basket that is free of rattles when going over the inevitable bumps and holes. Additionally, the center rack frame and the basket top rims form a solid, sturdy platform which allows the carrying of large, awkward cargo. Some examples that my basket has hauled include--

> A 19" standard (CRT-type) color TV.

> Set of stereo speakers.

> Stereo receiver with cabinet, along with microwave oven (all on the same trip!).

> *Two* 30 gal trash bags packed full of empty bottles & cans (light but awkward).

And most challenging of all...

> Same number & type of bags, stuffed full with laundry (awkward and HEAVY--approx 60lbs).

This basket truly does convert a bike into a mini truck. Best of all, while carrying the above-mentioned cargoes, the baskets themselves were available for extra items. With memories of the front basket that was on my boyhood bicycle and the instability it caused, I would never have another one. But for all the capabilities of this great product, it does have a few shortcomings.

1.) I wish the baskets themselves were not tapered. With their present design, something that fits through the top of a basket might not drop all the way to the bottom. This includes the standard-sized grocery bag. It takes a little finagling to get a fully loaded bag and its contents to go completely into a basket.

2.) The struts that attach to the rear axle have no provision for levelling the assembly on the bicycle. As a result, even on my old-school bicycle, which this product seems to have been designed for, the baskets are inclined downward at the rear. For the future I am looking into the possibility of fabricating some sort of strut extenders out of heavy gauge sheet metal.

3.) For improved stability, the bottoms of the baskets should have some means to anchor them to their adjacent seat stay. When carrying heavy loads, the present design allows excessive sideways motion and wobbling, adding to instability. The struts do a super job of weight-carrying and controlling vertical motion but are not up to handling the horizontal forces that develop when riding with a lot of weight in or on the baskets. In addition, these forces are transmitted directly to the forward clamp and the tops of the seat stays it is attached to. This can't be good for either the clamp or the stays.

Otherwise, this is a product that I can't say enough good things about. For those of us without four-wheeled transportation this basket definitely meets the definition of a "labor-saving device."

This did not fit my mountain bike so I had to return it. The space between the baskets was too narrow. I don't recommend this if the space between your hub nuts is 5.5" or greater.
