I recently purchased a new bike, and wanted to make sure it was protected against theft. My last bike, a Mongoose from Walmart, was stolen while locked up one night. The jerk just used bolt cutters to get right through the lock I had, it was a cheap bike and a cheap lock so I wasn't too disappointed. However, after spending over $500 on my bike this time around I wanted something that offered a little more protection. Enter the OnGuard Pitbull. This thing is heavy, and I would love to see someone try to cut this thing with standard bolt cutters. The title is misleading, as the cable it comes with is 4 feet, not 4 inches. It' great, actually thicker than the one that held my last bike "safe," it just needs a padlock to close it up. The mounting bracket attaches easily, and the lock is out of the way while riding. It comes with a set of 5 keys, one of which has an LED light to help find the lock in the darkvery useful for finding anything dropped on the ground as well. I read several places to get a lock that was 10% the price of your bike, so I took this to heart when I got this lock, not quite 10%, but I feel I got a good deal on it. Shipping took a little longer than expected but it was well-packaged and arrived the day before I got my bike. Their $2000 or so theft protection guarantee is pretty nice as well, in case someone can actually break this thing.

I just received mine today and it appears to be a fairly serious lock. Comments about the inadequacy of the mounting bracket are accurate... I tried to use it on the rear stay and couldn't find a place to mount it where it didn't smack the frame or get in the way of riding, and the lock is so heavy that I was afraid that a good bounce would knock it right out of the bracket. I use a Topeak beam rear rack with a matching bag to carry incidentals when riding around...keys, wallet, glasses etc. and my solution to the problem was to carry the cross bar and cable in the rear rack bag and use the mounting bracket to just hold the u-bar part of the lock (the assembled lock is simply too big to fit into the bag when put together). This seems to work very well and having shed half the weight of the lock makes the bracket closer to being adequate and the U-bar is comfortably out of the way when riding. The cable is of generous length, plenty to secure the front wheel, 4 feet in length, not 4" like the description says (and which has already been pointed out by others). Certainly the cable provides not much more than some additional visual deterrent and maybe a few seconds additional time if someone were quite determined to steal my bike, but I guess I have about as much security as is reasonable to carry around. My bike is brand new, a Specialized Hardrock Disc and on my first brief ride around town I already got some serious stares from a couple of guys up in the town square, and some comments about what a great looking bike it was from a group of guys I was near while waiting for a light to change. While I am glad to have a nice looking bike, it worries me that it gets as much attention as it apparently does... all in the space of 10 or so minutes.

This seems pretty strong and it is nice that it comes with so many keys. I trust my bikes with this lock much more than a cable lock and it is long enough to go through the bike frame and rack frame.

This is my first lock. I love the fact comes with 4 feet loop cable so I can hook the wheels to the frame of the bike.

This is a super sturdy lock. It would take some serious tool to cut through these locks. I also like this lock because it comes with the cable that allows you to hook the wheels to the frame of the bike. That being said, it's very difficult to use. The key and lock is difficult to turn and couple of times, when I thought the lock had snapped into place, it wasn't, and tugs off. I still haven't decided if I like these locks. If given the chance again, I probably won't buy them again.
