I have these pedals on Specialized Roubaix, and they are simply great.

If you are really into reducing weight, you may want to get Ultegra, Dura-Ace, or Speedplay pedals.

But if you're just starting the cleat pedals, this would be a great choice.

It took me 5 minutes to learn how to get in & out of it.

I keep the binding tension to the minimum, but it hasn't been disengaged accidentally during the 30mph riding.

The pedals come with quite a bit of grease in between the silvery part and black part, and these grease collect quite a bit of dirt within a week.

Since they are black, usual wear and tear on the side scratches up the clear coat and they become quite noticeable after some time.

I like these pedals. I am a recreational rider, but tend to ride competitively with myself; while I don't need the weight reduction/quality improvement of ultegra/dura-ace I like a durable and still, quality pedal. I got them essentially free when they accidentally ended up on a floor model bike I purchased (pedals unintentionally left off cost of bike), though having ridden the base model spd-sl pedals previously, I imagine I'd be alright paying for these (especially the discounted Amazon price). I've not used ultegra/dura-ace, so I can't compare. Over the spd-sl, though, I noticed the 105's tend to spin a little more freely. They are also much more secure. The clip in/out feels stronger and more solid without having adjusted the tension on the release. I haven't had problems clipping out for stopping, nor have I had my foot release under high torque (which happened on occasion with the spd-sl). Oppositely, they are easy to get into. They have a large target zone so mounting your bike in traffic isn't very difficult, and if you're not able to lock in quickly, the pedals are large/flat enough to use as a platform pedal until you've found time to properly secure your cleat. I've pedaled through a few turns and had a one hit the ground and minus cosmetic damage, they have not been phased (mechanically). The only issue I've found with these pedals is based on personal style. They have six degrees of float, which is comfortable, but for my style of riding, I've found the mechanism which returns your foot to the neutral position (center) is a little strong. I tend to run on the pigeon-toed side of straight, and have noticed that translates to my riding position. For shorter rides this isn't a problem, of course, but for longer ones I notice some fatigue. I know that riding style needs to change (and running for that matter) so I don't tear up my legs and it's something I'll work on it since I've become extremely aware of it. But for now, if you have similar tendencies, it's worth taking note if you're on a test ride or considering the 105s.

The Shimano 105 Pedals really work nicely for me. They provide a larger and more even surface for distribution of power on the pedals when peddling for more speed. I've tried and used other Shimano pedals and these beat the others for comfort and better allocation of power for that extra speed with less pedaling effort. I am a pure novice at cycling and do it for enjoyment and exercise. I ride 5 6 days a week and usually cover between 75 90 miles and ride for time. At 65 yrs young, these pedals make my days a heck of alot easier and more pleasurable.

These Shimano pedals are for lightweight, high-speed road bikes. They're tough, high quality and stylish, designed to be used only with specialist cycling shoes so won't be comfortable if you're wearing normal shoes or trainers. These pedals are supplied with cleats-to-fit in the box, which need to be screwed to the soles of your shoes before you begin to ride.

If you've never cycled whilst clipped to the pedals, there are some big advantages:

1. Because your shoes are attached to the pedals you pull the crank on the upstroke whilst pushing down with the other foot on the downstroke. Result: greater efficiency from energy expended, meaning you can ride faster and tackle uphills with less effort

2. Provided you fix the shoe-cleats right, your foot is always in the optimum position (ball of foot on pedal), so you ride with greater comfort and get better power transmission from leg muscles to pedals

You'll find that once you get used to this system you'll never go back. It makes a significant difference to your overall speed, and steep uphills seem to be much less effort with quicker recovery time. The Shimanos spin pretty freely but it never seems to be difficult to lock-in with the cleat, and unlocking is also a breeze. The pedals are just wide enough to fit the shoe cleat so don't get in the way when manoevering the bike or (in my experience) strike the road when cornering hard at an angle, which can be a problem with a wide pedal.

Caution: practice disengaging your shoes from the pedals (they are designed to disengage with a side-twist motion) so you can do it instinctively when for example you stop at a road junction and need to put your foot on the road. Failure to do so can result in comedy or occasionally minor injury as you tumble over with your feet locked to the pedals.

The pedals should last years maybe for the lifetime of the bike if they don't suffer accident damage but the cleats being hard plastic polymer will need replacement every so often, as they do wear out.
